Mahendra S. Kanthi had his initial education in Mumbai City and Rural Nothern Karnataka. He graduated with distinction of a First Rank, from Bangalore University in B.A. [Honors - Economics]. Later he attended the University of Minnesota [U of M, Minnesota, USA] and earned his M.A., in Economics from Bowling Green State University [BGSU, Ohio, USA], His Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Economies is from the University of Kentucky [U of K, Kentucky, USA].
Dr. Kanthi's the second son of Late S. R. Kanthiwho served as Parliamentary Secretary [in Bombay State] under late B. G. Kher, as Deputy Speaker [in Bombay State], as First Speaker of newly formed Mysore State [now Karnataka], as Chief Minister, as Minister for Finance and Education, as Minister for Education and as Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs.
Dr. Kanthi had travelled widely in Africa, Far East, Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean Region as a global consultant in the Field of International Economics. He has worked as a High Level Consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization [UNIDO] in the areasof Science and Technology, Plans and Policies of Third world Countries, He has been closely associated with several International Social Service Organizations as an expert in the field International Economics.
He had taught in Minority Education Institutions like Tennessee State University [TSU, Nashville, Tennessee, USA] and Kentucky State University [KSU, Frankfort Kentucky USA] where he has won accolades for his dedicated service to the Black Community, He has served as Professor of Economics [International Economics] at Saginaw ValleyState University [SVSU, University Center, Michigan, USA]
He had travelled throughout Karnataka with his father late S. R. Kanthi as early as 1948 visiting remote villages and meeting Farmers, Educators, Religious Leaders, Self Help Groups and Social Activists. He accompanied his father whenever Heads of State like Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt, Ho Chi Min of Vietnam, King Husein of Jordan, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip of Great BritainKing of Kuwait, King of Afghanistan, General Kamal of Iraq and Emperor HailaSelaisse of Erthiopia who made Official visits to Karnataka.This gave him an opportunity to witness first had the niceties of World Leadership.
Along with his father he had the good fortune of meeting eminent leaders like: PanditJawaralal Nehru, Vinoba Bhave, Morarji Desai, Babu Jagjivan Ram, Jaya Prakash Narayan, Kamaraj Nadar, Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Gulzarilal Nanda, Indira Gandhi, VV Giri, Y.B. Chavan, BabuRajendra Prasad, S.K. Patil, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. Ram SubhagSingh, S. Nijalingappa, DevarajUrs, RamaksrishnaHegde, B.D. Jatti, T Siddalingaiah, His Highness JayachamaRajendraWodeyar, H.C. Dasappa, Smt. Yashodaramma Dasappa, ChanbasappaAmbli, M. P. Patil, SahukarChennaian, Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, Sir Mirza Ismail, VeerendraPatil and Dr. SarvapalliRadhakrishnan, These memorable events have no doubt influenced his social philosophy and thinking since child hood.
Dr. Kanthi had used his expertise to offer advise and counsel to prominent United State Senators like Edward Kennedy, James Sasser [who was Chairman of the US Senate Budget Appropriations Committee and later served as US Ambassador to China under Former President Bill Clintonand late Frank Church [who was Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee] in areas of India/USA Relations, Third World Economics and US Foreign Policy Initiatives.
He had initiated several Memorandums of Understanding [MOU'S] between Saginaw Valley State University [SVSU, University Center, Michigan, USA] and the University of Mysore [Mysore, Karnataka, India], Lal Bahadur ShastriInstitute of Management [New Delhi, India], T.A. PaiManagement Institute [Manipal, Karnataka, India] and most recently with BasaveshwarVidyaVarhak Sangha [Bagalkot, Karnataka, India].
In addition to several books, Dr. Kanthihas also published over forty research papers in world wide professional journals. He is the recipient of prestigious Patterson and Kellogg Fellowships.
Dr. Kanthi has been active in sending native Karnataka students for higher education to well known US Universities. Majority of his students are now successful entrepreneurs.
He is currently involved in the creation of "S.R. Kanthi Memorial Trust" which aims at Creating Awareness amongst the Rural Population of Karnataka.
His interest continues to be the Political Economy of India and Karnataka in particular. He travels extensively in Northern/Southern Karnataka and interacts frequently with common people.
Dr. Kanthi continues to enthusiastically support "Development Policies" for a"Complete Decentralized Economy ".
